Fall 2009

Families and Friends of the Orchestra,

The 2009-2010 season for the Young People’s Philharmonic and Junior String Philharmonic is off to a great start.  It was “standing room only” for our first night meeting with the parents and Tuesday rehearsals are progressing nicely as our students prepare for the Holiday Concert. So, as we do at this time every year, we are kicking off our Annual Fund Drive.

The Young People’s Philharmonic has been performing for classical music lovers for over 30 years and it’s improving with age!  We continue with our traditional holiday and spring concerts, our school tours, and our other community performances, and this year we have set goals to increase our exposure to the general public.  We are also looking to improve communications with our school and private music teachers, and we continue to look for new and exciting ways to showcase our musicians’ talent.

The Board and the YPP staff are tight fisted when it comes to spending money on the program but running a high quality organization like the YPP does take some money.  This year’s budget is $64,000, a very frugal sum that is used to purchase music, lease rehearsal and concert space, transport our musicians and their instruments, and provide staff honoraria.  Student tuition (which is lower than that of similar organizations) covers less than half of our expenses so we depend on contributions from parents, friends and corporations.

Because of these tough economic times and the reduced state budget we expect reduced contributions from corporations and foundations that have supported us in the past.  We are relying on you to support our young musicians by sending a gift to the Annual Fund. Your tax-deductable contribution will help ensure continued success of this wonderful program.  If your employer has a matching gifts program (we know that Air Products, Verizon and PPL do) don’t forget to submit the application; it’s a great way to stretch your contribution.

Sincerely,
